Lincoln Center is one of New York's great cultural hubs. Located just a couple of blocks west of Central Park, it is home to Avery Fischer Hall, the Metropolitan Opera house, the New York City Ballet, and the New York Library of the Performing Arts, along with many other resident organizations. As a result of the pandemic, multiple gorgeous outdoor performance and event spaces were created on this 16-acre-campus focusing on the connection between art and civic engagement.
One such area is the iconic Josie Robertson Plaza which was re-imagined as “The GREEN,” turning the nearly 20,000 square feet of concrete expanse into a participatory public art installation that invites New Yorkers to relax and enjoy the open-air space, along with live performances.
Construction of Lincoln Center began in 1961 and continued for about 30 years. The project was spearheaded by John D. Rockefeller and involved some of the world's most famous architects, including Max Abramovitz and Pietro Belluschi.
The famous Julliard School, perhaps the most illustrious conservatory for the fine arts in the United States, is also housed at Lincoln Center. The school offers training in dance, drama, and music, and its graduates include Christopher Reeve, Kevin Kline, and Val Kilmer. The Center's Alice Tully Hall for concert performances is located within the Julliard building.
The David Rubinstein Atrium at Lincoln Center is an open space for public use. It offers free Wi-Fi and available tables and chairs. Free performances are sometimes hosted in the Atrium, and visitors can purchase food onsite. Same-day tickets for Lincoln Center events can be purchased at the Atrium at a discount.
