Children and their families can learn about NYC history by following the stories of past NYC characters, both famous and not-so-famous. Individual pavilions are full of historical details as well as hands-on activities.
You can usually find a program to join while visiting. The museum's Living History series, which takes place on weekends and holidays, brings historical characters to life with historians dressed up in period garb, interacting with museumgoers, and answering questions.
