Dec 11, 2023 - The Central Park Conservancy is currently resurfacing all 1.58 miles of the Reservoir's Stephanie and Fred Shuman Running Track.
The Conservancy periodically regrades the track when there are major shifts in the surface, like potholes that can happen during the winter freeze and thaw cycle, or vegetation and other debris that build up along the outside edge of the track.
The longer-term solution currently underway involves repairing/replacing the plastic board infrastructure of the track and topping it with crushed stone, ranging in size from quarter-inch pebbles to fine dust.
The work is being done in five phases, with runners temporarily diverted onto the Bridle Path (which makes a wider loop around the reservoir before heading towards Central Park South). It is predicted that the entire track will be ready by late spring 2024, or early summer at the latest.
