DNAInfo.com reports that dancers with swords will occupy Central Park, and several city libraries and museums this weekend as part of the 31st annual Sword Dance Festival.
Since 1988, Yonina Gordon has been dancing with the New York City-based group Half Moon Sword, which hosts the festival. There are different types of dances, including the rapper sword dance, which are "flashier," faster-paced and uses flexible swords. Then there's the long sword dance that uses more rigid swords for slower, militaristic movement, Gordon said.
The Half Moon Sword group has anywhere from 12 to 14 dancers. The women come from a variety of backgrounds. Some are teachers, while others are professionals in the legal, literary and educational worlds.
On Saturday, head to the Dana Discovery Center in Central Park, at 110th Street, at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. To read the article in its entirety, click here.
