A week after notorious graffiti artist Banksy set up a stand in Central Park to sell original cavases at $60 each, and only sold eight to three people, a booth offering fake Banksy prints at the same price sold out all forty in one hour. Self described artist and professional hoaxer, somewhat like Banksy himself, Dave Cicirelli and fellow artist Lance Pilgrim set up the stand in the same area as a satirical social commentary.
“We wouldn’t have sold any, if not for the media hype around Banksy,” Cicirelli told Animal. “That was kind of the point—we wanted to complete his statement about the nature of hype and the value of art.”
Each of Cicirelli's canvases came with a "legally notarized" "Certificate of Inauthenticity."
Also following in the fashion of Banksy, Cirelli posted a video of the sale on YouTube where he noted, "Same price. Fake Art."
