The first ever "Squirrel Census" was recently conducted in Central Park. Over 300 volunteers spent 11 days scouring the 843 acres of the park and counted approximately 2,373 Eastern Gray Squirrels. This comes after the squirrel was expunged from New York City around the 1840’s.
As an interesting note, Sally Parham, the census’ logistics chief said, “(I) got a number that was huge and I intuitively halved it. And the difference between the real number and my guess was 212, New York City’s area code.”
