Despite being disappointed by the cancelled New York City Marathon and frustrated by the mayor’s last minute decision only two days before the race was scheduled to take place, many of the 47,500 would-be marathoners spent their time and energy to helping those hit hardest by Superstorm Sandy.
As part of the various ways those who had intended to run the marathon diverted their time to aid in the storm relief efforts, a Facebook group called “Run Away” encouraged participating in their charity marathon circling Central Park with monetary and clothing donations forwarded straight to Long Island and places most in need.
