The first NYC Marathon was run entirely in Central Park. But since 1976 the race has begun at Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island, crossed the Verrazano Bridge - normally closed to pedestrians - and culminated in Central Park. However, since Fort Wadsworth is a federally run park, it is currently closed due to the government shutdown. If the government does not change their direction by Nov. 3, 48,000 runners may have to. Race organizers pledge that the race will not be cancelled again, as it was last year due to Hurricane Sandy, and claim to have a contingency plan, though it remains undisclosed.
