Despite the cold temperature and gusting winds that had officials worried, the fabled Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade was celebrated almost without incident - the two exceptions being a deflated arm on the Spider-Man balloon and an injured foot on a volunteer carrying the Buzz Lightyear balloon.
Parade volunteer Keri O’Connell, 39, was injured when a golf cart riding with the 67-foot-long "Toy Story" hero ran over her right foot around 10:30 a.m. at W. 75th St. and Central Park West. The pre-K teacher was taken to Roosevelt Hospital after a golf cart attached to the same balloon ran over her foot. Doctors at Roosevelt Hospital said she may have a hairline fracture in her foot and recommended she visit a podiatrist.
Meanwhile, two blocks away at W. 77th St., the 78-foot-long Spider-Man balloon had to float through the 87th annual parade with a deflated arm after a run-in with a Central Park tree. Spidey was among the 15 balloons the NYPD ordered to fly below the typical height due to strong winds.
Despite winds gusting up to 43 mph, these were the only two glitches among 30 floats, 1,600 cheerleaders and dancers, 900 clowns and 11 marching bands in an otherwise perfect parade.
