Eight ducklings of a critically endangered species have successfully hatched at the Central Park Zoo.
The Chinese merganser ducklings, which hatched April 26, 2011, are the first to hatch at a zoo in North America, said the Wildlife Conservation Society.
The zoo has two breeding pairs of Chinese mergansers, also called scaly-sided mergansers, a species of sea duck native to eastern Asia.
The zoo hopes the successful breeding of the Chinese merganser will help with the conservation of the species.
