Central Park Zoo's beloved polar bear Gus was euthanized Tuesday after having suffered from an inoperable thyroid tumor. The 27-year-old was born in the Toledo Zoo in 1985, and has received more than 20 million visitors since he arrived in New York in 1988. Famous for his neurosis and depressive bouts, he was treated by a psychiatrist in 1994. His long-time companion, Ida, died two years ago from cancer. She was 25. Both lived beyond the average life expectancy for captive polar bears, which is 20.7 years, according to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
