Taking on the 150-year-old tradition of carriage rides in Central Park, Gov. David Patterson is demanding better treatment of horses used to taxi around more than 800,000 customers a year. His comments were in front of an animal activist group and drew praise from PETA, or People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, noting the current living conditions and working conditions of the horses. Spokespeople for organizations such as the Horse and Carriage Association disagree however, assuring protesters that "the animals have a fantastic life."
