Though the purpose is unclear from known prankster and British graffiti artist Banksy - whose work normally sells for hundreds of thousands of dollars - a stall was set up selling his stencils beside Central Park on Saturday for $60 a piece. Some of the artworks were riffs on famous Banksy graffiti works such as a rat riding a scooter and a bandana-masked protester hurling a bouquet of flowers. However, by passers were either mostly unfamiliar with his work or in disbelief that the small works would be originals. The elderly man who ran the stand didn't make its first sale for four hours until 3:30pm, and only three buyers were responsible for a total day's sales of $420, some having negotiated discounts.
The stand was a one-day only event that will not recur.
