Mar 17th, 2024 - The repair of 108 blocks of sidewalks around Central Park is underway in order to make them more accessible to people using wheelchairs, strollers, and other mobility devices.
The granite blocks and asphalt tiles from the 1930s-installed sidewalks now pose safety and accessibility hazards due to wear and tear from foot traffic, as well as natural changes from overgrown tree roots, pooled water, and more.
The Central Park Conservancy plans to make the sidewalks safer and more accessible, while also restoring some of the original design patterns and preserving the park's elm trees.
