Celebrating Shakespeare’s final play on the 400th anniversary of the playwright’s death, writer/director Alice Mottola (Brightness) is collaborating with the OCTPFAS Theater Company to produce a dramatic re-imagining of The Tempest, to be performed by an all-female cast outdoors in Central Park in New York City on May 19 and May 20, 2016. Her co-director, Pitr Strait (Henry IV.1, The Skriker), is a veteran of Central Park Shakespeare, having directed Two Gentlemen of Verona and a previous production of The Tempest, and a long-time collaborator of Ms. Mottola's.
The play’s selective use of nudity to dramatize The Tempest's central themes of alienation and reconciliation builds on a long tradition of free expression in theatrical productions held in outdoor settings. Past productions performed in Central Park, including Hair and Henry V, have featured full nudity in a similarly artistic, non-sexual context.
The production will feature a cast of eight actors, three dancers, and two musicians, with costume design by Delcey Fleming, body paint by Andy Golub, and assistant direction by Sarah Itzkoff.
The outdoor action takes place May 19 at 5:30pm and May 20 at 2pm near Summit Rock.
This is a free event.
