King Lear by William Shakespeare with Nahum Tate’s 1681 “happy ending”!
The original source material for King Lear wasn’t a tragedy! Tate’s adaptation—which lets our well-meaning royal live and let live—was performed almost exclusively until the 1840s.
All NY Classical performances are FREE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Walk-up participants are welcome on a first-come, first-serve basis on the day of the performance based on the size of each park lawn.
You will be surrounded by the action! The performance may begin facing south, and then we’ll turn north for the next scene. Expect entrances from all around you. Picnics at the performance are welcome and encouraged! Bring a blanket to sit on. (and maybe some bug spray)
These in person performances will have limited attendance based on the theater's NYC Department of Parks & Recreation permits. They are asking everyone to RSVP and make a free reservation, so they can:
