Red Lory (Eos bornea)

Red Lory sings the blues
at the Central Park Zoo.


Where found : Wooded coasts, mountain swamps, and mangrove forests of Indonesia, New Guinea, and Australia. This bird can usually be found high in the trees of the Tropic building. She is not shy- you will hear her loud call.
Diet : Primarily pollen and nectar, but this bird will eat fruit, insects, seeds, flowers, and other parts of plants. At the Central Park Zoo, Mrs. Jasper is fed bird salad and nectar.
Length : Adults may grow up to 12 inches.
Weight : 5–7 ounces.
Description: Primarily a brilliant red with black and blue on the wings and under the tail. They have red eyes, an orange beak, and charcoal gray legs.

Blue-crowned hanging parrot (Loriculus galgulus)
Where found : Open woodland, bamboo, and orchards from Thailand to Borneo. At the Central Park Zoo, these small parrots may be found upstairs on the Mezzanine level, across from the Black Lion tamarins.
Diet : Flowers, buds, fruits, nuts, and seeds.
Length: Adults may grow up to 4 inches.
Weight : Up to 150g.
Description : This small, colorful parrot has a red rump and a black bill. The male is mostly green with patches of color: red on the breast, orange on the back, and blue on the crown. The female lacks the scarlet throat. The feet are brown or orange. The name “Blue-crowned” refers to the bright blue coloring on the head of this small parrot, making it easily distinguishable.
