The tulip is one of the most easily recognized and most popular flowers in the United States, and is an important part of the Conservatory Garden. In fact, the Conservatory Garden is home to more than 20,000 tulips each year. At the Garden's annual Tulip Toss, volunteers remove the tulip bulbs from the ground and transplant them to other areas of the park. Tulips, which are members of the Liliaceae family, are very easy to maintain because they are bulbous perennials. These luscious blooms are prolific throughout Europe, parts of Africa, and parts of Asia. Tulips grow in a staggering variety of colors, among them, orange, white, pink, yellow, and red.
